Mission Camp Overview
Nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, the heart of Appalachia, Sunset Gap hosts mission groups to aid the poverty-stricken and those that cannot help themselves. Since 1964, mission groups have served some of the poorest residents in the nation by helping rebuild the Sunset Gap community.
Time Commitment
A typical mission camp week begins on Sunday afternoon/evening when your group arrives. Groups usually leave after breakfast on Saturdays. Work is done between 9am-4pm Monday – Friday.
If you can only volunteer for a day or two, we welcome you as well. Please contact us to see how we can fit into your schedule.
Work Projects
Work projects range from making community members' homes wheelchair accessible, building decks and porches (expanding cramped living quarters), repairing homes, and improving facilities on campus.
You will choose projects according to your group's abilities and budget. Much of your time will be spent in the community, on the repair site of your choosing.
Meals
Breakfasts and dinners are prepared by our wonderful Sunset Gap cooks, in the kitchen, of the main building. Sandwiches are prepared by the groups to take to work sites for lunches.
Accommodations
We are able to accommodate up to 85 campers and counselors. Communal housing with bunk beds is available. Kitchenettes may be used for snack preparation. Wifi is available on campus. Flush toilets, showers, and heating and cooling are in all of our facilities.
Cost
$400 per participant plus cost of project materials (rate based on week-long mission). Tools and supplies for projects may need to be purchased depending on project selected. Sunset Gap does have limited tools available for use.
Transportation
Transportation to and from work sites and nearby recreation will be provided by your group leaders in your own vehicles. Sunset Gap may transport materials to work sites as needed.
